Crown (CAP)

A CROWN or CAP is used to protect tooth structure from biting forces. It is used mainly in these situations:

  1. When a tooth has little natural tooth structure left – this is the case when teeth have very extensive fillings and little or no natural tooth structure left so they are very prone to fracture. A crown can help protect what is left of the tooth.

  2. When a tooth has undergone Root Canal, it has lost much natural tooth structure and any remaining structure becomes very dry and brittle, hence also very prone to fracture. A crown can help protect what is left of the tooth.

  3. Sometimes if a tooth has a crack in it that does not go very deep, a crown can be used to hold the tooth from the outside and provide some protection against forces so that the crack does not get bigger.

The main purpose of a crown is protection for the tooth against forces that it’s exposed to on a constant basis. If the tooth has little natural tooth structure left, a foundation needs to be secured and built on the tooth so that the crown can be seated on structure that is solid.

A picture is worth a thousand words. It would be our pleasure to show you examples of all these procedures in pictures and models at a consultation appointment.
